LUNA MOTH

On a hot, muggy July night this elusive beauty I managed to catch while it rested for its last time on the screen door of one of my neighbors.  I was 13 years old, 1972, and one of my many hobbies was insect collecting,

I would catch, mount, and display them at several country fairs earning ribbons and a buttload of knowledge.

This is a Luna Moth (actias luna), a male.  A member of the giant silkworm moth family Saturnidae, it lives in the forests of North America.  I have had this moth -- along with several others -- still mounted and in pristine condition.  More than likely I will donate the collection to a university or  museum so they can continue to raise a sense of awe...many of you have no idea that these amazing creatures exist along side of us!

Granted it is not technically "art", but this type of work is extremely exacting and tedious.

"This blog is one of the best art galleries that I have seen till now! I say so because the pictures were put together with the contemplation of the drawings by the artist here. The visual stories gave a hand to the word and thus the artist's visions became presented in full. Meanwhile the typical galleries limit the text to the announcements of the price and thus easy navigation results in total mess- what is what and what for all that is for me usually becomes the riddle. Yet Gary L. Skinner, a Seattle artist escape such confusion - he addresses us heartily and not as the potential buyers but the friends - therefore our Thank You comes as if out of itself. So this art gallery depicts the art of living. Thank once again. Your blog looks just fabulous"

"Gary - I feel most priveleged to have found your site -you seem to have the extraordinary ability to capture the essence of the moment in your drawings. I found myself drawn in and kept scrolling and reading your posts underneath - some delicious and delightful comments. And the drawings are whimsical and magical and poetic. Thank you . I can stop reviewing now as everything I see will not come close to what is posted here. Many thanks for the privilege."
